How did flags come into use?
Flag - " a piece of flexible material, typically a rectangle of cloth of distinctive design and coloration, displayed for transmission of a signal or as a symbol of the identity of a political or other organization of office." - Encyclopaedia Britannica.
The use of flags has been traced back to early Assyrian and Egyptian times, where the mounting of sacred objects on poles served as signs of royal authority, or as rallying positions during battle. Cloth flags were used in ancient India and China for similar reasons, preceding Christian use by many centuries. Islamic invaders brought the use of flags to Europe, where the growing popularity of the art of heraldry influenced the designs and made the use of flags more widespread. A similar course of action occurred in Japan around the same time.
The 20th Century has seen the use and number of flags increase dramatically especially after WWII, where the use of flags has become more widespread than at any other time in history.
Many researchers in various fields; sociology, political science, history, have recognised the use of flags as artifacts expressing the culture, attitudes and views of a particular time. This recognition leads to the study of the etiquette of flags, symbolism and history, known as vexillology.
Flags are commonly expressive of the body for which the represent, where often the colours of a flag may relate directly to the coat of arms, a tradition, national character, a religious symbol, or a political ideology.
Several conventional connotations may be seen on national flags: crosses for Christian communities, crescents for Islam, stars for royalty, and the Union Jack referring to a country history as part of the British Commonwealth.
Why would you want to own a flag?
Flags are such a great thing to have. They are a fantastic decorative fabric, draped on a wall, above a fireplace, over a table or hung from the front of your house, business, school, or establishment. You can take your flag to a sports game, or a parade, a national day celebration, or a historical celebration, and you can wave it, or wear it. The best thing about a flag is being able to identify yourself or your life with it.
How many sizes do flags come in? We offer many sizes of flags from our inventory so to avoid confusion, it is vital to know exactly the flag size you want for your needs. (See Flag Sizes Information for more details)
What is the difference between an indoor flag and an outdoor flag?
Indoor Use: A flag made of material such as woven polyester is suitable for indoor use but has limited outdoor usage as heat and wind would affect the material very quickly, damaging the fly edge or fading the colours.
There are indoor flag poles available for holding up the flag. We offer the telescopic flag pole for this purpose.
Outdoor Use: Outdoor flags are usually made of hardier fabric such as triple knitted bunting or cotton or synthetic trilobal. This helps it withstand the weather elements much better and would extend its life tremendously. There are also ways of further weather-proofing the outdoor flag such as sealing it with a water proof based chemical. With our custom made flags, we have reinforced the fly edges with additional sewing as part of the finishing.
Outdoor flag poles can also be custom-made so we can advise you on the size of the flag to fly if you know the height of the flag pole you want to erect.
